The buildtools will make compile packages from source easy, as long as you have installed all required packages (if not, check the archive for other buildtools). Have a look here for more details.

For friends of the Gnome desktop

If you want to install a complete GNOME desktop only, then you can try the buildsystem: A script to install GNOME from the official sources using the Slackware way: creating packages from source and use installpkg for install. Feel free to read the documentation or watch some sample videos.

For the geeks:

The buildsystem includes about 1000 buildtools to install the GNOME or KDE desktop including extra applications, Mono platform and a lot of other packages.
